Taxis & Rideshare in Kolkata (2026) - Grab, Uber & More
Taxis and rideshare in Kolkata: local taxi apps, Uber, Grab, typical fares, and tips for safe, affordable rides around India.
Safety Tips
Look for yellow-top Ambassador taxis with a yellow registration plate and rooftop 'TAXI'' sign, unlicensed cars rarely have all three elements.
Insist on the mechanical meter being turned on at the start. If the driver claims it's broken, step out, Kolkata's yellow taxis are legally required to use the meter.
Locals rely on Ola and Uber. Book through the app to get the driver's name, photo, and vehicle number before you approach the car.
For solo or late-night rides, share the app's live trip tracker with a friend and sit in the rear seat, Kolkata's street lighting can be patchy and some areas near the docks and rail yards are best avoided after dark.
Common Scams to Avoid
Drivers refusing to use the meter and quoting inflated flat fares, at Howrah and Sealdah stations and the airport. Insist on the meter or walk to the prepaid taxi booth. If no booth exists, negotiate firmly using a ride-hailing app fare as a benchmark.
Tampered or "fast-running" meters that rack up the fare at double the normal speed, most commonly reported on routes between Park Street and Salt Lake or to the airport. Watch the meter digits and compare the distance/time with a map app. If the jump seems excessive, ask the driver to stop and note the cab number for a complaint.
Drivers taking deliberately circuitous routes through congested areas like Esplanade or Gariahat to inflate both distance and waiting waiting-time charges. Track your route on a phone map and politely direct the driver back to the shortest path. If he refuses, end the ride in a safe spot and switch to a ride-hailing service.
